Romania visit provides eastern promise to Notts firms

Construction and regeneration firms from Nottingham have the chance to pitch for potentially lucrative contracts which could see them play a part in the redevelopment of Romania’s second largest city.

A delegation of civic and development industry representatives from Timisoara is visiting Nottingham in February on a fact-finding mission to discover if some of the city’s key redevelopment projects can be replicated there.

The group will include the city’s Mayor, Gheorghe Ciuhandu, director of development Aurelia Junie and Robin Barnett, the British ambassador to Romania.

As part of the visit, a special networking event will take place at the Galleries of Justice on 16 February 2010 to give local firms the opportunity to meet the Romanian delegates and pitch for business and contracts. Around 20 companies have signed up to attend the event.

Since joining the EU in 2007, Romania has benefitted from access to development funding which has been invested into restoring key urban infrastructure.

The visit is the result of the joint efforts of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber, Nottingham City Council, the UK Embassy in Romania, international trade organisation UKTI and the East Midlands Development Agency, which resulted in a cooperation deal between the two cities in 2008.

It will offer firms in both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire significant business opportunities because of European money being invested in improving the infrastructure of the so-called "accession states" – eastern European countries who only recently joined the EU.

The delegation is expected to outline plans to regenerate a city which has some 14,500 historic buildings – plans likely to attract European Regional Development Fund backing.

Firms working in the local design, development and construction industries could be well-placed to secure work on any schemes which go ahead, as the visit will enable them to discover the opportunities before anyone else and pitch their ideas and expertise directly to the decision makers involved.

David Hood, the Chamber’s head of international and information, said: “Romania’s economic progress in recent years has made it one of the top countries for conducting export and import business and its strong economy and potential for further growth make it an area of particular interest for our members.

“This visit will give our businesses the chance to make valuable business contacts along with the opportunity to tender for some of the potentially lucrative contracts which are on offer as part of Timisoara’s ambitious redevelopment plans and the Enterprise Europe Network run by the Chamber will continue to support companies following the visit to help them make the most of these opportunities.”
