Exporting starts at home
A short while ago I dined at a very well known Leicestershire venue that attracts people from all over the country. The dessert menu included 'a selection of French cheeses'. Nothing wrong in that you may say but ponder a little longer and you begin to wonder why specifically French cheeses. The UK remains one of South Africa’s key foreign direct investors.
South Africa is 4th on the list of key emerging markets for global investors, with a wealth of opportunities for UK expertise across almost every sector of the economy, including access to the rest of Africa’s 300+ million customers.
What are the Opportunities
There are significant trade and investment opportunities both now and in the long term in virtually every sector in South Africa. UK Trade & Investment can help you get the best out of these opportunities by providing advice and support through our UK and overseas network.
Know before you go
Anyone serious about investing would not go into an endeavour with eyes closed. Like other developing economies, South Africa is subject to global economic fluctuations. Sound fiscal polices have shielded the country from much financial toil, but South Africa is not immune and investors are advised to thoroughly research industries they wish to enter.
Corruption is the biggest obstacle on South Africa's road to economic success. In recent years high ranking corporate and government officials have been involved in dubious dealings. Many have been brought to book and dogged media attention has ensured that stamping out corruption is high on the government's agenda.
Legislation is in place that aims to repair past inequalities. Companies setting up in South Africa need to be aware of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment, the legislation involved, and how to operate a business that complies with these laws.
